1) FOR WHEN I CRAVE ARTISTRY & VIBRANCY
Whenever I crave a dose of Dakar's artistic heartbeat, I find myself drawn to the Village Artisanal at Soumbedioune, a vibrant market with local creatives. This place makes me so proud because my grandparents actually started the leather tanning workshops, and every time I visit, I get to sit with my uncles and listen to their rich stories about what craftsmanship truly means to them.
2) MY SUNSET SANCTUARY
The Phare des Mamelles, with its panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, has become my sanctuary for sunsets in Dakar. I recommend going there for good drinks or having some fresh seafood as you watch the day's end against the backdrop of the Atlantic. On Friday night they have great parties with really amazing music and a fire show.
3) CELEBRATING BLACK CIVILIZATIONS AND SENEGAL’S CULTURE
The Museum of Black Civilizations has been my personal time machine, allowing me to journey through Senegal's rich history. Each artifact and exhibit feels like a bridge between the past and present, connecting me to the diverse tapestry of our West African heritage. It's a place where my appreciation for Senegal's roots deepens with every visit, making me feel intricately woven into the fabric of our shared history. I highly recommend blocking a full day, multiple times, to fully immerse yourself.
4) MY REFRESHING CULINARY OASIS
Maison d’Italie, in Ngor Island, is my culinary oasis in Dakar, a secret escape only a 15-minute boat ride away. The food is amazing, and the setting, surrounded by turquoise waters, turns every meal into a celebration. After indulging in exquisite cuisine, the refreshing swim in the Atlantic becomes the perfect end to my little escape.
5) A REMINDER OF OUR PAST AND PROGRESS
Goree Island is a historical destination recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This small island served as a center for the transatlantic slave trade. Today, its colorful streets, colonial architecture, and cultural landmarks stand as a reminder of the island's troubled past. Visitors can explore museums and monuments while enjoying the island's vibrant local culture and stunning ocean views. Growing up, this was a common destination for our school trips and weekend getaways.
EXTRA TIP: take a drive to Saly and stay at Maison Blu
Saly, nestled along Senegal's captivating coastline, is where we spent every weekend as a family growing up, and today represents the definition of a ‘dream home’ for me. Renowned for its golden beaches, palm-fringed boulevards, and bustling markets, Saly offers a dynamic blend of beachside tranquility and lively local life.
I recently renovated our family house in Saly, and it felt so special! I was responsible for the interior design, and everything, from the pillows to the furniture, was handmade by local artisans. Even though this is outside Dakar, it is my personal favorite activity, and I’m biased here because this was my first home design project (and also a childhood vacation home) You can now book your stay through Airbnb and find some of my
