CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY EVERY DAY
Black History Month is here! This is such an important time because it creates space for people to actually pay attention, to learn, care, and hopefully to start important conversations because being black is something we want to celebrate every day.
I believe small actions can spark change in an industry where legacy brands have so much power and where there is little room for newbies. It is important to show us that our work is relevant and to give us opportunities for visibility and recognition. That's why I chose to share with you five of my favorite black-owned brands.
Supporting black businesses can take many forms, and this is the way we found this year to celebrate our friends in the industry.

AAKS - Handcrafted Raffia Bags
Known for their vibrant and handwoven bags, AAKS effortlessly blends tradition with contemporary style. The colorful designs not only make a bold fashion statement but also celebrate the rich heritage of Ghanaian craftsmanship. I now own 3 AAKS bags and the design and quality is really beautiful.
Busayo
I met Busayo back in 2021 as we were both part of the inaugural class of the Stitchfix Elevate program. Her brand stands out not only for its amazing prints and colors but also for the genuine love for Nigerian culture that shines through every piece.
Imadi
Home decor is my passion, and when it comes to handcrafted bags, and baskets, Imadi definitely stands out. I met the founder, Fatou Jobe back in 2013 when I was in the ideation phases of DIARRABLU and she would always come to my studio after work and order custom dresses. Today her brand can be found in major retailers such as Anthropologie. I love how she celebrates traditional Senegalese weaving techniques, passed down through generations while adding a special and modern touch to everything she creates.
Brandon Blackwood
This well-known brand represents a unique perspective to luxury accessories. Its strong commitment to amplifying black voices and black culture in the fashion industry is so inspiring. I got my first bag 2 years ago and the quality is impeccable.
Ami Colé
With a focus on inclusivity, AMI COLÉ celebrates the diverse beauty of all skin types, making their products a must-have for those seeking a clean and conscious approach to skincare. The founder is also from Senegal and some of their campaign shot there are so wonderful.
